About Sandy Springs

Sandy Springs is a city of about 108,000 people just north of Atlanta, stretching between Interstate 285 and the Chattahoochee River. It was named for a natural spring that drew Methodist camp meetings in the 1800s, and it became a city only in 2005, though it has long been one of the region's busiest business districts. The tall glass King and Queen towers along Georgia 400 are its best-known skyline landmark.

The city's green side is its riverfront. Several units of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area lie along its western edge, including Island Ford and East Palisades, where trails climb past rocky bluffs, a bamboo forest and views over the river, which is popular for tubing and kayaking in summer. Morgan Falls Overlook Park looks out over Bull Sluice Lake behind Morgan Falls Dam. The Lost Corner Preserve is a quiet woodland park with a 1930s cottage, gardens and trails.

City Springs, the new civic center, brings a performing arts theater, a green with concerts and a Sunday farmers market. Heritage Sandy Springs keeps the original spring, gardens and a historic house museum. The Abernathy Greenway Park has sculptures and playgrounds, and Perimeter Mall and restaurants line the city's commercial core, with downtown Atlanta about 20 minutes south.

Best seasonApril to May and October to November for river trails and outdoor concerts.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the Chattahoochee trails, City Springs and Heritage Sandy Springs.
ArrivingHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about 30 minutes away; MARTA trains stop in the city.
