Woodstock is a city of about 36,000 people in Cherokee County, about 30 miles north of downtown Atlanta, near the southern shore of Lake Allatoona. It grew up around a railroad depot in the late 1800s and stayed a small farming town for decades before becoming one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Georgia, with a downtown that is now one of the region's most popular small-town centers.
Downtown Woodstock, along Main Street and the railroad tracks, is lined with restaurants, breweries, boutiques and patios, and the Woodstock Visitors Center tells the city's story. The Woodstock Arts center presents theater, concerts and outdoor shows at the Reeves House and its gardens, and the Elm Street Cultural Arts Village is a hub for performances. Historic brick churches and homes, a gazebo park and seasonal festivals add to the small-town charm.
The city is known for its trails: the Greenprints trail network includes the Noonday Creek Trail and boardwalks through the woods, and Olde Rope Mill Park, on the Little River, has mountain biking trails and the ruins of a 19th-century mill. Lake Allatoona offers boating, beaches and lakeside parks, and the Etowah River and the North Georgia mountains are a short drive north.
Downtown Woodstock has grown into one of the most popular small downtowns in metro Atlanta, with restaurants, breweries, boutiques and coffee shops on Main Street and in new walkable blocks. Events fill the calendar. Visit on a weekend evening, and use the parking decks rather than circling for street spaces.
The Woodstock Visitors Center is set in the historic Dean's Store building on Main Street, with local history exhibits, maps and information about events and attractions. Friendly staff can suggest restaurants and trails. Stop here first for a downtown walking map and the latest event schedule.
Elm Street Cultural Arts Village is a downtown arts campus in Woodstock with a theater, an outdoor event green and studio spaces, staging plays, musicals, concerts and children's shows. It is a center of local cultural life. Check the season schedule and book tickets ahead for family productions.
Olde Rope Mill Park sits along the Little River near Woodstock, with ruins of a nineteenth century rope mill, river views and access to popular mountain biking trails such as Rope Mill Trails. It is a favorite spot for riders and walkers. Wear good shoes, and yield to bikes on shared trail sections.
The Park at City Center is a downtown park in Woodstock with a lawn, a playground, a splash area and a stage for events, next to city buildings and the library. It hosts concerts and festivals. Let kids play while you grab coffee nearby, and check the city calendar for free summer events.
Dupree Park is a Cherokee County park in Woodstock with wooded trails, a playground, a dog park, picnic areas and an equestrian area. It is a calm place for nature walks close to town. Trails can be muddy after rain, so wear sturdy shoes, and bring a leash for the dog park area.
Reformation Brewery is a craft brewery in downtown Woodstock with a relaxed taproom and a large patio, serving Belgian-inspired and American-style beers. Food trucks and events often visit, and it is walking distance from Main Street. Check the taproom hours and event schedule before you go.
