About Decatur

Decatur is the county seat of DeKalb County, a compact and walkable city about six miles east of downtown Atlanta. Founded in 1823 and named for the naval hero Stephen Decatur, it is older than Atlanta itself, and its leafy streets, bungalow neighborhoods and busy town square give it the feel of a small college town inside the big metro. About 25,000 people live here.

Everything starts at the Decatur Square, with its gazebo, fountains and lawns, framed by the Historic DeKalb County Courthouse. Built in 1898, the courthouse now houses the DeKalb History Center, and a MARTA rail station sits right beneath the square, so you can arrive from Atlanta without a car. The streets around it are packed with independent restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores and pubs, including the Brick Store Pub, and Eddie's Attic has launched many singer-songwriters from its small listening room.

Agnes Scott College, founded in 1889, has a Gothic Revival campus a short walk from downtown, and the Oakhurst neighborhood to the south adds more cafés and parks. The square hosts concerts and festivals through the year, including the Decatur Arts Festival in spring, and Emory University and the Fernbank Museum of Natural History are a short drive away.

Best seasonMarch to May for festivals and blooming yards, and September to November for patio dining and cooler walks.
Ideal stayHalf a day for the square and downtown, a full day with Agnes Scott, Oakhurst and Fernbank.
ArrivingHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about 15 miles away, and MARTA trains run straight to Decatur station on the square.
