Canton is a city of about 33,000 people and the county seat of Cherokee County, set on the Etowah River roughly 40 miles north of Atlanta at the edge of the north Georgia foothills. It was founded in the 1830s and grew in the late 1800s and early 1900s around cotton mills and the railroad, when Canton Cotton Mills was one of the area's largest employers. Today the city blends a restored historic downtown with fast-growing neighborhoods and easy access to mountains and lakes.
Downtown Canton centers on Cannon Park, a small green with a white gazebo, brick walks and historic markers, surrounded by shops and restaurants along Main Street. The 1920s Canton Theatre on the square hosts concerts, films and events, and the Cherokee County Historic Courthouse, built of white Georgia marble, is the area's most striking landmark. The Cherokee Arts Center showcases local art and performances, and the former mill complex along the river has been reborn as The Mill on Etowah, with food, shops and event space.
The Etowah River shapes much of Canton's outdoor life. Etowah River Park offers riverside paths, boardwalks and green space, and a growing trail network follows the river and passes under bridges toward downtown. Boling Park has ballfields and a riverside setting, and Lake Allatoona, the north Georgia mountains and the city of Woodstock are all within a short drive.
Downtown Canton is a compact historic district along Main Street with restored brick storefronts, local restaurants, breweries and shops near the Etowah River. It hosts First Friday gatherings and seasonal festivals. Park in a public lot and walk; the area is small enough to see in an hour or two.
Cannon Park is a small green space in the middle of downtown Canton with a splash fountain, shade trees and benches. It is a gathering point for festivals, concerts and holiday events. It is a good spot to rest between shops and restaurants, and kids love the fountain in summer.
Etowah River Park is a riverside park in Canton with a paved walking trail, playground, picnic pavilions, an amphitheater and access to the Etowah River for kayaks and canoes. It is a favorite spot for families and walkers. Check river levels before paddling, as conditions change after heavy rain.
Boling Park is a large Cherokee County park on the edge of Canton beside the Etowah River, with sports fields, walking trails, a playground and picnic areas. Local youth leagues use it heavily. Weekday visits are quieter, and the river trail is a nice easy stroll in the cooler months.
The Canton Theatre is a restored historic theater in downtown Canton that hosts live music, plays, comedy and community performances. Its intimate auditorium makes most seats feel close to the stage. Check the schedule online and plan dinner downtown before a show, as everything is within a short walk.
The historic Cherokee County Courthouse is a landmark marble building in downtown Canton, built in the 1920s after an earlier courthouse burned. It now houses county uses and anchors the downtown streetscape. Admire the facade from Main Street and combine it with a walk around the historic district.
Cherokee Veterans Park in Canton honors local veterans with memorials and a flag plaza, alongside walking trails, sports fields and open space. It is used for Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. Take a moment at the memorial wall and allow time for a walk on the park loop.
The Cherokee Arts Center occupies a former church building in downtown Canton and hosts art exhibits, concerts, classes and small performances run by the local arts council. It is a hub for regional artists and community events. See the current program before you go, as gallery hours vary.
The Mill on Etowah is a redeveloped historic cotton mill complex beside the Etowah River in Canton, now home to restaurants, a brewery, shops, offices and event space. Old brick walls and industrial details remain. Come for a meal or drink and walk to the nearby riverside paths afterward.
The Cherokee County Aquatic Center in Canton is a public indoor pool complex with a competition pool, a leisure pool with slides and play features, and swim lessons. It is a good rainy day option for families. Check the open swim schedule before going, as lap and team practices take priority at times.
