About Atlanta

Atlanta began as a railroad junction, was burned during the Civil War, and rebuilt itself into the commercial capital of the Southeast. It is also central to the story of the civil rights movement as the hometown of Martin Luther King Jr., and its sprawl of neighborhoods sits under a famously thick tree canopy.

The park built for the 1996 Olympics is now ringed by some of the city's biggest draws, from an enormous aquarium and a museum devoted to the world's best-known soda to a powerful civil and human rights center and a hall of fame for college football. A short ride east, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park preserves his birth home and Ebenezer Baptist Church along Auburn Avenue, close to the stalls of Sweet Auburn Curb Market. The BeltLine Eastside Trail, a rail corridor turned walking path, links Krog Street Market with Ponce City Market, housed in an old Sears building. Midtown has Piedmont Park, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the High Museum of Art and the ornate Fox Theatre, and Historic Oakland Cemetery is a peaceful place to read the city's past in stone.

Atlanta suits food lovers and history-minded travelers who don't mind traffic. MARTA trains reach the airport, downtown and Midtown, but a car helps for outlying areas. Summers are hot and humid; spring brings blooming dogwoods.

Best seasonMarch through May and October through November offer mild temperatures and blooming or turning trees.
Ideal stayThree to four days covers downtown, Sweet Auburn, the BeltLine and Midtown.
ArrivingHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the main gateway, linked to the city by MARTA rail.
