About Acworth

Acworth is a small lakeside city in northwest metro Atlanta, about 34 miles from downtown along Interstate 75, mostly in Cobb County with a sliver in Cherokee County. It grew up as a watering stop on the Western and Atlantic Railroad, which reached the town in 1840, and took its name in 1843 from a railroad engineer's hometown of Acworth, New Hampshire. Incorporated in 1860, it was captured and burned by Union troops in 1864 and rebuilt along the tracks. About 22,000 people live here today.

Locals call it the Lake City. Lake Acworth sits right beside downtown, with walking paths, footbridges and Cauble Park's sandy beach, while the much larger Lake Allatoona spreads north toward the Etowah River with marinas, coves and lakeside parks. Downtown keeps a small-town feel, with shops and restaurants along Main Street and Lemon Street and freight trains still rolling through the middle of town.

Logan Farm Park adds shady trails, a pond and a bridge over Tanyard Creek, and Kennworth Park is home to Horizon Field, a ballpark built so players of every ability can join in. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in neighboring Kennesaw are a short drive away, and Red Top Mountain State Park lies on Lake Allatoona to the north.

Best seasonMay to September for swimming, paddling and boating on the lakes, and October for cooler walks downtown.
Ideal stayHalf a day for downtown and Lake Acworth, a full day with Lake Allatoona or Kennesaw Mountain.
ArrivingHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about 45 miles southeast via I-75; a car is the easiest way to get around.
