Douglasville is a city of about 35,000 people and the county seat of Douglas County, about 20 miles west of downtown Atlanta along Interstate 20. It was founded in 1875 when the Georgia Pacific Railway came through, and its historic downtown along the old railroad tracks has become a popular place to eat and gather.
O'Neal Plaza, the downtown green, has a fountain, a stage and a red Southern Railway caboose, and it hosts concerts, a farmers market and festivals, with restaurants and patios on the surrounding streets. The 1956 Douglas County Courthouse, a white columned building now used for city events, overlooks the area, and the Douglas County Museum of History and Art occupies the old courthouse. Historic homes and churches line the nearby streets.
Sweetwater Creek State Park, on the city's eastern edge, is the area's highlight: its trails follow a rushing creek past the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill burned during the Civil War, and its lake offers paddling and fishing. The Arbor Place Mall, Hunter Park and the Chattahoochee River and Six Flags Over Georgia are a short drive away.
Downtown Douglasville is a historic district along Broad Street with restored buildings, local restaurants, a conference center and public art. It hosts concerts, festivals and holiday events throughout the year. Visit during an event at O'Neal Plaza, and walk the blocks along the railroad tracks.
O'Neal Plaza is a small downtown park in Douglasville with a fountain, a lawn and a stage, used for concerts, movie nights and festivals. It is the heart of downtown events. Check the city's calendar for free summer concerts, and bring a chair or blanket for the lawn.
Deer Lick Park is a Douglas County park with sports fields, a playground, a walking trail and an outdoor amphitheater used for concerts and events. It is a popular family stop in the area. Check the county events calendar, and visit on weekday mornings for a quieter walk around the park.
Douglas County's historic courthouse in downtown Douglasville is a mid-twentieth century building that served the county for decades before a new courthouse opened. It now houses the county museum of history and art. Look for the historical markers outside, then go inside for the museum exhibits.
The Douglas County Museum of History and Art is housed in the old courthouse downtown and covers local history, from Native American life and early settlement to the twentieth century, along with art exhibitions. Admission is usually free. Allow about an hour, and check opening hours before visiting.
Sweetwater Creek State Park protects a rocky creek valley with the ruins of the New Manchester textile mill, burned during the Civil War. Trails follow the rushing creek to the mill ruins and rapids, and a lake offers fishing and boat rentals. Go early on weekends, as parking fills up quickly.
Clinton Nature Preserve is a county preserve in Douglas County with wooded trails, a historic log cabin and a quiet natural setting suited to walking, mountain biking and picnics. It is less busy than larger parks. Bring water and wear good shoes, as some trails are hilly and can be muddy after rain.
Hunter Park is a Douglasville city park with sports fields, a playground, a walking track and picnic areas, used for youth sports and community events. It is close to downtown and easy to reach. Bring a picnic and let kids enjoy the playground, and expect busy weekends during sports seasons.
Arbor Place Mall is a large indoor shopping mall in Douglasville with department stores, national retailers, a food court and a movie theater nearby. It is the main shopping center for west metro Atlanta. Visit on weekdays for lighter crowds, and explore the restaurants around the mall's ring road.
Six Flags Over Georgia is a large theme park east of Douglasville with roller coasters, thrill rides, family areas and seasonal events like Fright Fest and Holiday in the Park. Hurricane Harbor water park sits next door. Buy tickets online ahead, and arrive at opening to ride popular coasters before lines grow.
