About Brookhaven

Brookhaven is a city of about 55,000 people in DeKalb County, just northeast of Atlanta's Buckhead district. It became a city in 2012, but its roots go back to the early 1900s, when Historic Brookhaven grew around the Capital City Club's golf course as one of the first country-club neighborhoods in the South.

The city's best-known landmark is Oglethorpe University, whose Collegiate Gothic stone buildings and green quad look like an English college; the campus is home to the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art and the Crypt of Civilization, a sealed time capsule from 1940 meant to be opened in the year 8113. Blackburn Park II, Murphey Candler Park and Brookhaven Park offer trails, lakes and playgrounds, and the city is known for its cherry blossoms each spring, celebrated at the Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival.

Buford Highway, which runs along the city's edge, is one of the most diverse food corridors in the country, with Mexican, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese and other restaurants, as well as the colorful Plaza Fiesta market. Town Brookhaven has shops and restaurants near the MARTA station, and Peachtree Road links the city to Buckhead and Midtown Atlanta.

Best seasonLate March to April for cherry blossoms, or October for mild weather in the parks.
Ideal stayHalf a day to a day for Oglethorpe University, the parks and dinner on Buford Highway.
ArrivingHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about 25 minutes away; MARTA trains stop in the city.
