Newnan is a city of about 45,000 people and the county seat of Coweta County, about 40 miles southwest of Atlanta. Founded in 1828, it is known as the City of Homes for its remarkable collection of antebellum and Victorian houses, many of which survived the Civil War because the town served as a hospital center for wounded soldiers of both sides.
The historic Court Square is built around the 1904 Coweta County Courthouse, a grand red-brick building with a clock tower and dome, and the surrounding blocks hold local restaurants, boutiques, the Alamo theater and antique shops. Several historic districts, including College-Temple and Greenville-LaGrange, are lined with columned mansions, Queen Anne cottages and shady front porches that are lovely to explore on foot. The Newnan Carnegie Library and the McRitchie-Hollis Museum, set in a 1937 mansion, cover local history and art, and the Male Academy Museum tells the story of the Civil War in Coweta County.
The Newnan LINC trail network and Greenville Street Park give space for walking and biking, and the Coweta County area offers farms, the Chattahoochee Bend State Park on the river and the Powers Crossroads country fair. Newnan has also become a popular filming location, with downtown streets appearing in movies and television series.
Newnan's Court Square is the lively historic center of town, surrounding the domed county courthouse with restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and antique stores in old brick buildings. It hosts markets and holiday events. Park once and explore on foot, then walk out to the nearby historic districts.
The College-Temple Historic District is one of Newnan's grand residential neighborhoods, lined with antebellum and Victorian homes, many with wide porches and tall columns. Newnan is known as the City of Homes for streets like these. Walk or drive slowly along College and Temple streets to admire the houses.
The Coweta County Courthouse is a grand Neoclassical courthouse from 1904 with a tall dome and clock, standing at the center of Court Square. It has appeared in several films and television productions. It is best seen from outside, and is especially photogenic in the evening when it is lit.
The Newnan Carnegie Library is a restored early twentieth century library near Court Square, built with funds from Andrew Carnegie and now used as a community space with a reading room, meeting rooms and events. Its classical facade is a highlight of downtown. Stop in to see the restored interior when it is open.
The McRitchie-Hollis Museum is set in a 1937 Neoclassical house in Newnan, showing exhibits on the city's history, architecture and decorative arts. The house and gardens are attractive in themselves. Allow about an hour, and ask about walking tour information for the historic districts nearby.
The Male Academy Museum occupies an 1883 school building and covers Coweta County history, with exhibits on the Civil War, textiles, early schools and local families. It is run by the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. Check hours before visiting, and take time to see the historic classroom display.
Newnan Theatre Company is a community theater near Court Square, staging comedies, dramas and musicals in an intimate downtown playhouse. Local volunteers produce a full season of shows each year. Tickets are affordable, and pairing a show with dinner on the square makes an easy evening out.
Greenville Street Park is a small downtown park in Newnan with a lawn, stage, gardens and seating, used for concerts, festivals and farmers markets. It is a short walk from Court Square. Check the city events schedule for free concerts, and bring a blanket for the lawn on summer evenings.
The Newnan LINC is a growing network of paved multi-use trails linking parks, schools and neighborhoods around Newnan. It is popular for walking, running and biking, with wooded stretches and creek views. Start at a park trailhead with parking and follow the route markers for a loop of your chosen length.
Dunaway Gardens is a historic rock garden in Roscoe, west of Newnan, created in the 1930s by actress Hetty Jane Dunaway as a theater retreat. Stone paths, terraces, ponds and a sunken garden wind through the hillside. It is used for events, so check visiting days and hours before making the drive.
Chattahoochee Bend State Park is one of Georgia's larger state parks, set along the Chattahoochee River west of Newnan. It has riverside campsites, a paddling launch, hiking trails, an observation tower and a fishing area. Bring a kayak or canoe for river trips, and insect repellent in warm months.
