Orem is a city of about 100,000 people in Utah Valley, just north of Provo, with the steep Wasatch Range and Mount Timpanogos rising right above town. Once known for its fruit orchards, it is now home to Utah Valley University, the state's largest university by enrollment, and a busy tech and retail corridor nicknamed Family City USA.
The Utah Valley University campus has modern buildings and a lively student scene, and the SCERA Center for the Performing Arts stages plays, concerts and outdoor summer shows in its shell amphitheater. The Orem Heritage Museum tells the story of the city's orchards and early settlers, and the University Place mall has shopping and dining.
Orem sits at the mouth of Provo Canyon, where Bridal Veil Falls tumbles down the cliffs and the Provo River Trail follows the water up toward Sundance and Deer Creek Reservoir. Hikes on Mount Timpanogos, ski runs at Sundance and the shores of Utah Lake are all within easy reach.
Community arts center in Orem with a historic indoor theater that stages musicals, plays, concerts and classes year round. It has been a cultural hub for the city for decades. Check the season calendar, and book early for popular family musicals and holiday shows.
Outdoor amphitheater in SCERA Park where Broadway-style musicals and concerts are staged on summer evenings. Audiences sit in seats or on the lawn under the stars. Bring a blanket and a jacket, as evenings can cool down quickly near the mountains.
Family-run community theater known for intimate productions of musicals and comedies where the audience sits close to the stage. Shows run through much of the year. Tickets are affordable, but popular shows sell out, so buy early and arrive in time to find parking.
Small local history museum at the SCERA Center with photos, artifacts and stories from Orem's past as a farming community known for orchards. Admission is free. Stop in before or after a SCERA show, and ask about the history of the area's fruit farms.
Large public university in Orem with a modern campus, sports events, galleries and the Noorda Center for the Performing Arts, which hosts concerts and plays. Visitors can walk the campus and catch games. Check the university calendar for public performances and exhibits.
Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dedicated in 2024, with a tall spire and landscaped grounds near the west side of the city. The grounds are open to visitors, though the inside is open only to members. Walk the gardens in the evening when the building is lit.
Historic park with a pond, a stream, mature trees, a gazebo and a restored pioneer home, popular for wedding and family photos. Ducks gather by the water. It is a calm place for a short stroll, and spring and fall bring the best colors for photos.
Annual community festival held in June in Orem, with a parade, carnival rides, live music, food vendors and a fireworks show, centered around the city center park. It draws families from across Utah Valley. Arrive early for parade seating, and bring a blanket for the evening concert and fireworks.
Large mixed-use shopping center in Orem with department stores, many shops and restaurants, a movie theater and new apartments and offices around it. It is the main shopping destination of the valley. Visit for dinner and a movie, and look for seasonal events in the plaza.
Tall, rugged peak that rises above Orem and dominates the skyline of Utah Valley, reaching about 11,750 feet. Trails from the north and east sides lead to the summit past waterfalls and wildflower meadows. Start before dawn for a summit hike, and check snow conditions early in the season.
