West Valley City is Utah's second-largest city, home to about 140,000 people on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley, with the Oquirrh Mountains rising to the west. It incorporated in 1980 from several farming communities, and it is one of the most diverse cities in the state, with large Latino, Pacific Islander and Asian communities.
The Maverik Center hosts hockey, concerts and big events and was a venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and the USANA Amphitheatre is one of the region's main outdoor concert stages in summer. The Utah Cultural Celebration Center presents festivals, art exhibits and performances celebrating the city's many cultures.
Centennial Park and the Jordan River Parkway trail offer green space, and West Valley Central Station links the city to Salt Lake City by TRAX light rail. Downtown Salt Lake City, the Great Salt Lake and the ski resorts of the Wasatch are all within easy reach.
A large outdoor amphitheater in West Valley City that hosts major concert tours each summer, with reserved seats under a covered pavilion and a big lawn area. The Oquirrh Mountains make a scenic backdrop at sunset. Bring a blanket for the lawn and plan for slow traffic leaving after shows.
An indoor arena that hosted ice hockey during the 2002 Winter Olympics and is now home to the Utah Grizzlies minor league hockey team, plus concerts, rodeos and family shows. It sits next to the city's civic center area. Check the events calendar and buy tickets ahead for big concerts.
A city-owned 27-hole golf course in West Valley City with wide fairways, water features and views of the Oquirrh and Wasatch mountains. It is known for good value. Book tee times ahead and play early in summer to avoid the afternoon heat.
A city cultural center with galleries, an outdoor amphitheater and event spaces that celebrate the many cultures living in the Salt Lake Valley through art exhibits, concerts and festivals. Gallery entry is usually free. Check the calendar for cultural festivals in summer.
A large city park in West Valley City with sports fields, playgrounds, picnic pavilions and walking paths, located near the city's family fitness center. It hosts community events. It is a good place for a family picnic and an easy walk.
West Valley City's developing city center around the West Valley Central TRAX and bus station, with a pedestrian promenade, apartments, offices and a hotel, a short walk from the Maverik Center and City Hall. It hosts community events. Ride TRAX from Salt Lake City to visit easily.
A large shopping mall in West Valley City with department stores, national brands and restaurants, recently updated with new dining and entertainment spaces. It is a convenient stop for shopping and food. Parking is free and plentiful.
