About Bountiful

Bountiful climbs the slopes of the Wasatch Front just north of Salt Lake City, and from almost any street on its east bench the Great Salt Lake glitters to the west. Mormon pioneers settled here in 1847, only weeks after the first wagon trains reached the valley, making it one of the oldest European American settlements in Utah, and the town took its name from a city in the Book of Mormon.

The pioneer story is still visible. The Bountiful Tabernacle, completed in 1863, is among the oldest Latter-day Saint meetinghouses still in use, while the white Bountiful Utah Temple, dedicated in 1995, stands high on the mountainside with views across the whole valley. Main Street keeps a small-town feel with family restaurants and shops, and each July the Handcart Days celebration honors the pioneers with a parade and fireworks.

The mountains are the real draw. Mueller Park and Holbrook Canyon trails climb into forests of maple and oak, Skyline Drive winds high along the ridge, and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail traces an ancient lakeshore. Downtown Salt Lake City is only 15 minutes south.

Best seasonMay to October for hiking; late September and early October for fall color in the canyons.
Ideal stayA day for the temple grounds, Main Street and a canyon hike, or longer as a quiet base for Salt Lake City.
ArrivingSalt Lake City International Airport is about 20 minutes away; I-15 and the Legacy Parkway run along the west side.
