About Sandy

Sandy is a city of about 95,000 people in the southeast Salt Lake Valley, right at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains and the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon. Named for its sandy soil, it began as a mining and railroad town in the 1870s and is now one of Utah's largest suburbs, with some of the best mountain access in the state.

Rio Tinto Stadium is home to Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer, and the Sandy Museum tells the city's mining and pioneer story in a historic home. The Hale Centre Theatre has a state-of-the-art stage, and the South Towne area has shopping and dining.

The mountains are the main draw. Bell Canyon's trail climbs past a reservoir to waterfalls, the Rocky Mouth Falls trail leads to a canyon waterfall, and Dimple Dell Regional Park runs a long natural ravine through the city. In winter, the world-famous ski resorts of Snowbird and Alta are only about 20 minutes up Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Best seasonJune to September for canyon hikes and soccer, and December to April for skiing at Snowbird and Alta.
Ideal stayOne day for a hike and a match, longer as a ski base.
ArrivingSalt Lake City International Airport is about 25 miles north, and TRAX light rail serves Sandy.
