About Grand Junction

Grand Junction is the largest city on Colorado's Western Slope, with about 67,000 people where the Colorado and Gunnison rivers meet. Founded in 1881, it grew as a farming and railroad town in the Grand Valley, surrounded by red rock canyons, mesas and orchards. The name comes from the "junction" of the Grand River, the old name of the upper Colorado, with the Gunnison.

Colorado National Monument rises just west of town, with Rim Rock Drive winding past towering sandstone monoliths and deep canyons. To the east, the Grand Mesa is one of the largest flat-topped mountains in the world, dotted with hundreds of lakes. The nearby town of Palisade is famous for its peaches and wineries.

Downtown Grand Junction's Main Street is lined with shops, restaurants and outdoor sculptures. The Riverfront Trail follows the Colorado River, and the area is known for mountain biking, rafting and hiking. Suplizio Field hosts the JUCO World Series each spring.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October for hiking, wine and mild desert weather.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for Colorado National Monument, downtown, Palisade wineries and the Grand Mesa.
ArrivingGrand Junction Regional Airport is about 10 minutes north; Amtrak's California Zephyr stops downtown.
