Murray is a city in the middle of Utah's Salt Lake Valley, about seven miles south of downtown Salt Lake City, with the Wasatch Range rising to the east. Named for territorial governor Eli Murray, it grew around farms and a large smelting industry whose towering smokestacks were a landmark until they were demolished in 1999.
Today Murray is a convenient, family-friendly base with green spaces along Big and Little Cottonwood creeks. Murray City Park is its centerpiece, with an arboretum of labeled trees, playgrounds, an outdoor pool and an amphitheater that hosts summer musicals and concerts. Wheeler Historic Farm keeps the area's farming past alive with a Victorian farmhouse, barns, animals and wagon rides.
The restored Murray Theater on State Street presents films and live shows, and Fashion Place Mall draws shoppers from across the valley. TRAX light rail links Murray to Salt Lake City, while Big and Little Cottonwood canyons, with their hiking and ski resorts, are about half an hour away.
A Salt Lake County historic farm preserving a Victorian farmhouse, barns and fields from the early 1900s. Kids can meet cows, pigs and chickens, watch milking demonstrations and ride a horse-drawn wagon, and the grounds have walking paths and ponds. Entry to the grounds is free; tours cost extra.
Murray's main park along Big and Little Cottonwood creeks, with shady lawns, footbridges, playgrounds, picnic pavilions, an outdoor aquatics center and a gazebo. Murals and a September 11 memorial add interest. It is busy on summer weekends, so come early for a pavilion or parking near State Street.
A collection of hundreds of labeled trees and shrubs spread through Murray City Park, making it an easy outdoor classroom for plant lovers. Follow the paths along the creek to find native and exotic species. It is especially pretty in spring blossom and fall color, and it is free to explore.
An open-air amphitheater in Murray City Park where the city's arts program stages Broadway-style musicals, concerts and dance performances on summer evenings. Bring a jacket, as nights cool quickly in the valley, and buy tickets in advance for popular musicals, which often sell out.
A 1930s movie house on State Street with a classic marquee, restored by the city as a venue for live performances, films and community events. It is one of the few historic theaters left in the valley. Check the city's events calendar for showtimes, and park in the lots behind State Street.
One of Utah's largest shopping malls, on State Street in Murray, with department stores, a wide range of national brands, restaurants and a food court. It is a convenient stop for shopping or a meal and is easy to reach by car or from nearby TRAX stations. Weekday mornings are the quietest time.
A paved multi-use trail following the Jordan River along Murray's western edge, part of a long parkway running through the Salt Lake Valley. It passes wetlands, cottonwood groves and small parks where you can watch herons and ducks. Good for biking or an easy walk; carry water in summer.
