About Layton

Layton is a city of about 85,000 people in Davis County, northern Utah, between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains. Settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1850s and named after Christopher Layton, an early settler, it grew from farmland into one of the largest cities in Utah, helped by nearby Hill Air Force Base.

The Layton Utah Temple, completed in 2024, stands at the foot of the mountains and has become a city landmark. The Heritage Museum of Layton tells the story of the area's pioneers, and the Layton Commons Park hosts summer concerts and events near the city center.

Layton has easy access to the outdoors. The Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve offers boardwalks for bird watching, Adams Canyon has a popular hike to a waterfall, and Antelope Island State Park, with bison and lake views, is a short drive west. The Hill Aerospace Museum, with more than 100 aircraft, is just north of town.

Best seasonMay to October for canyon hikes, the lake shore and outdoor events.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the temple grounds, Adams Canyon, the Shorelands Preserve and Antelope Island.
ArrivingSalt Lake City International Airport is about 30 minutes south; FrontRunner trains stop in Layton.
