About Saint George

St. George is a city of about 100,000 people in the far southwest corner of Utah, surrounded by red sandstone cliffs and black volcanic ridges. Mormon pioneers sent by Brigham Young founded it in 1861 to grow cotton, earning the region the nickname Utah's Dixie. The gleaming white St. George Temple, completed in 1877, was the first Latter-day Saint temple finished in the West.

Today St. George is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, popular with retirees and outdoor lovers for its warm, sunny climate. Its historic downtown keeps pioneer buildings, Brigham Young's winter home and the Tabernacle, as well as the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site, where thousands of fossilized dinosaur tracks were uncovered in 2000.

The landscapes are spectacular. Snow Canyon State Park, just north of town, has red and white sandstone, lava tubes and trails, and Red Cliffs National Conservation Area protects desert tortoises and slot canyons. Zion National Park is less than an hour away, and the Tuacahn Amphitheatre stages outdoor musicals against the cliffs.

Best seasonOctober to May for mild weather; summers are very hot.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for downtown, Snow Canyon, the dinosaur site and a day at Zion.
ArrivingSt. George Regional Airport has flights to several hubs; Las Vegas is about two hours southwest.
