About American Fork

American Fork takes its name from the river that tumbles out of a deep granite canyon on the north flank of Mount Timpanogos, and that canyon is still the main reason visitors come. Founded by Mormon pioneers in 1850 along the shore of Utah Lake, the town has grown into a busy Utah County city, yet its tree-lined center keeps a pioneer-era tabernacle and early brick buildings.

A short drive east, American Fork Canyon leads to Timpanogos Cave National Monument, where a steep paved trail climbs to three connected limestone caverns. Higher up, the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway threads through aspen forest past Tibble Fork Reservoir and trailheads into the Lone Peak and Mount Timpanogos wilderness areas, glowing gold in late September.

Back in town, the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple and the 1930s amphitheater of the old state training school are local landmarks, and the summer Steel Days celebration remembers the steel mill that once anchored the economy.

Best seasonJune to early October for the canyon and cave; late September for fall colors on the Alpine Loop.
Ideal stayOne full day for the cave tour and a canyon drive, two with a hike.
ArrivingSalt Lake City International Airport is about 35 minutes north; FrontRunner trains stop at American Fork Station.
