About Opelika

Brick storefronts along a railroad that still carries freight through the middle of town give Opelika its character. This east Alabama city of about 32,000 people, the seat of Lee County, sits right beside Auburn and has become a weekend draw for golf, live music and small-town dining.

The town grew up in the mid-1800s where rail lines met, and much of its downtown and the Victorian houses of the Northside Historic District date from the decades that followed. The restored commercial blocks on Railroad Avenue now hold boutiques, cafes and a craft distillery, overlooked by the 1896 Lee County Courthouse.

Golfers come for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National, families ride the miniature Rocky Brook Rocket in Municipal Park, and the Museum of East Alabama tells local stories. Auburn University, Chewacla State Park and the coves of Lake Martin are easy side trips from town.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November, for mild weather, golf and downtown festivals.
Ideal stayOne to two days, easily paired with a visit to Auburn.
ArrivingInterstate 85 runs along the city; Atlanta's airport is about 1.5 to 2 hours northeast and Montgomery about an hour southwest.
