About Fort Worth

Fort Worth sits at the western end of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, and it has long embraced the nickname Cowtown. The city grew as a stop on cattle drives and later as a major livestock market and meatpacking center, and that frontier heritage remains part of its identity. Yet Fort Worth is just as proud of its museums, which rank among the strongest in the American Southwest.

In the Fort Worth Stockyards, brick buildings and wooden pens recall the cattle trade, and a small herd of longhorns is driven down the street on a regular schedule. Billy Bob's Texas, a huge honky-tonk, hosts country music concerts and live bull riding, while the Stockyards Championship Rodeo runs on weekend nights. The Cultural District offers a very different mood. The Kimbell Art Museum, designed by Louis Kahn, holds a superb collection in a celebrated building, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth faces it with a glass-and-concrete pavilion by Tadao Ando. The Amon Carter Museum of American Art and other institutions sit nearby.

Downtown's Sundance Square is a lively plaza ringed by restaurants, and the Fort Worth Water Gardens offer a striking architectural landscape. The Botanic Garden and Trinity River trails provide green space. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons.
