About Garland

Garland is a city of about 245,000 people in Dallas County, about 15 miles northeast of downtown Dallas. It was formed in 1891 when the rival settlements of Duck Creek and Embree merged around a new railroad depot, and it was named after US Attorney General Augustus Garland. For much of the 1900s it was a farming and manufacturing town before growing into one of the larger suburbs of the Metroplex.

The heart of the city is its historic downtown square, where a redesigned plaza, local restaurants and the Plaza Theatre, a restored 1940s movie house now used for live performances, host concerts and events. The Granville Arts Center and the Garland Landmark Museum, housed in the 1901 Santa Fe railroad depot, tell the story of the city's past, and a vintage Pullman car sits beside the depot.

Garland's east side borders Lake Ray Hubbard, a large reservoir popular for boating, fishing and sunset views. Spring Creek Forest Preserve protects one of the last old-growth hardwood forests in North Texas, and Hawaiian Falls water park and Firewheel Town Center add family entertainment and shopping. DART light rail connects downtown Garland to Dallas.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November for festivals on the square and lake days; summers are hot.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown, the Landmark Museum and Lake Ray Hubbard.
ArrivingDallas Love Field and DFW Airport are 25 to 40 minutes away; the DART Blue Line serves downtown Garland.
