About Dallas

Dallas grew on the prairie of North Texas as a hub for cotton, then oil, banking and retail, and it remains a business-minded city with a gleaming skyline and a sprawling metro area. Its history is inseparable from November 22, 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated downtown, and the city has carefully preserved the sites connected to that day.

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, inside the former Texas School Book Depository, walks visitors through the assassination and its aftermath, and the stark John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza stands a short walk away. Nearby, Pioneer Plaza's bronze sculptures depict a cattle drive across downtown, and Reunion Tower's lighted sphere offers a panoramic observation deck. In the Arts District, the Dallas Museum of Art anchors a cluster of museums, concert halls and theaters, and Klyde Warren Park, built over a sunken freeway, fills with food trucks and lunchtime crowds. The Perot Museum of Nature and Science sits just beyond. Evenings lead to Deep Ellum's live music and murals or the independent shops and restaurants of the Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff. Fair Park preserves Art Deco exhibition buildings and hosts the State Fair of Texas each fall.

A car is helpful, though DART light rail covers several key areas. Spring and fall are most comfortable; summers are hot. Fort Worth is an easy add-on.
