About Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is a small town in the Texas Hill Country, founded in 1846 by German immigrants who built sturdy limestone houses and set out a long, wide main street. That heritage still shapes the town's character, from its architecture to its bakeries and beer halls. Over the years, peach orchards, wildflowers and a growing number of wineries have made it one of the most popular getaways in central Texas.

Main Street is the center of activity, with shops, galleries, restaurants and tasting rooms housed in historic buildings. The Vereins Kirche, a replica of an early octagonal church, stands on the Marktplatz, and the Pioneer Museum preserves early homes and outbuildings. The twin spires of St. Mary's and the older Marienkirche rise a few blocks away. Fredericksburg was the hometown of Admiral Chester Nimitz, and the National Museum of the Pacific War offers an extensive look at the war in the Pacific. Cross Mountain Park provides a short climb and a view over town.

The town suits couples, wine enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys a slower, small-town pace. Enchanted Rock, a giant pink granite dome north of town, is a favorite hike. In spring, bluebonnets bloom across the region and Wildseed Farms is in full color. Wine Road 290 links many wineries, and Luckenbach offers country music under the oaks.

Best seasonSpring brings wildflowers and mild weather, and early summer is peach season in the surrounding orchards.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers Main Street, the Pacific War museum, Enchanted Rock and a few wineries.
ArrivingMost visitors drive from San Antonio or Austin, whose airports are roughly ninety minutes away.
