Lewisville is a city of about 110,000 people in the northern Dallas-Fort Worth area, on the southern shore of Lewisville Lake. It grew from a small farming town on the railroad into a busy suburb along Interstate 35E, while keeping a small historic downtown known as Old Town.
Lewisville Lake, a large reservoir on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, is the city's main draw, with marinas, beaches, fishing and boating. Below the dam, the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area protects woods, prairie and wetlands with trails and paddling routes, and the Timber Creek Trail winds through shaded greenbelts.
Old Town Lewisville centers on Wayne Ferguson Plaza, with fountains, events and the MCL Grand theater, and every fall the Western Days festival fills the streets. Railroad Park, Vista Ridge Mall and easy DCTA train links add to its appeal. Dallas, Denton and DFW Airport are all a short drive away.
A large reservoir on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, popular for boating, sailing, jet skiing, fishing and swimming, with marinas and parks around its shore. Sunsets over the water are beautiful. Rent a boat or paddleboard at a marina, and check water conditions after heavy rain before swimming.
Known as LLELA, this preserve below the Lewisville Lake dam protects bottomland forest, tallgrass prairie and wetlands along the Elm Fork. Trails, bird blinds, a historic cabin and a kayak launch make it great for nature lovers. A small entry fee applies; check open days and bring insect repellent.
A city-run park on Lewisville Lake with a swimming beach, a marina, campsites, picnic areas and a disc golf course. It is the easiest place in town to spend a day by the water. A vehicle entry fee applies in season; arrive early on summer weekends when parking fills.
A large city park in north Lewisville, with sports fields, a lake, walking trails, a boardwalk and a dog park. It hosts tournaments and community events, and the trails are good for a relaxed walk any day. Parking is free; weekends are busy with games, so visit on weekdays for quiet.
The historic downtown along Main Street and Mill Street, with local restaurants, coffee shops, breweries and boutiques in older brick buildings. It is the center of the city's festivals and holiday events. Come for dinner, then stroll to Wayne Ferguson Plaza to see the fountains lit up in the evening.
The central plaza of Old Town Lewisville, with interactive fountains, a stage, lawns and shade structures beside City Hall. It hosts concerts, movies, markets and Christmas tree lighting. Children love the splash fountains in summer, so bring a towel; check the city calendar for evening events.
The city's performing arts center in Old Town, with a main theater and smaller spaces hosting concerts, plays, comedy, dance and art exhibits by local and touring artists. It is an intimate venue with good sightlines. Check the calendar, and plan dinner at a nearby Old Town restaurant before a show.
A free festival held each fall in Old Town Lewisville, with live country and rock music, a carnival, food vendors and Western-themed activities for families. It draws large crowds from across North Texas. Use the DCTA train or park and ride, as parking downtown fills fast.
A greenbelt trail following Timber Creek through wooded parkland in Lewisville, with paved and natural surface sections, small bridges and side paths through the trees. It is a peaceful spot for walking, running and cycling. Go after a dry spell, as low sections can get muddy, and watch for cyclists.
An indoor regional mall near Interstate 35E with department stores, fashion and specialty shops, a food court and nearby restaurants and cinemas. It is a handy place to escape the summer heat. Weekday mornings are quiet, and the surrounding shopping area has many more stores and restaurants.
