About Cleburne

Cleburne is the county seat of Johnson County in North Texas, a city of about 30,000 people roughly 30 miles south of Fort Worth. Founded in 1867 and named after Confederate general Patrick Cleburne, it grew as a cattle town and later as a major railroad center when the Santa Fe Railway built large shops here.

The city's historic downtown is anchored by the 1913 Johnson County Courthouse, a striking domed landmark surrounded by brick buildings filled with antique shops, cafes and the Plaza Theatre Company, a popular community theater. The Layland Museum, housed in the early 1900s Carnegie library, covers local history from Native American artifacts to the railroad era.

Cleburne's best outdoor escape is Cleburne State Park, with a spring-fed lake, a Civilian Conservation Corps dam and wooded hills. Lake Pat Cleburne offers fishing and boating on the edge of town, and the Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum recalls the cattle drives that once passed through the area.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November, avoiding the hottest summer months.
Ideal stayOne day, or a weekend with a night of camping at Cleburne State Park.
ArrivingDallas/Fort Worth International Airport is about an hour north; Amtrak's Texas Eagle stops in Cleburne.
