About Greenville

Cotton built Greenville, and the city still tells that story with pride. The seat of Hunt County, about 50 miles northeast of Dallas, has roughly 28,000 people and grew up in the late 1800s around railroads, cotton gins and compresses, becoming a major cotton market for the Blackland Prairie.

The Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum explains that farming history and honors Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of World War II, who was born in Hunt County. Downtown keeps a solid core of brick commercial buildings, the stately Hunt County Courthouse and the restored Texan Theater, which hosts concerts and films.

Today Greenville makes an easy stop on I-30 between Dallas and the Piney Woods, with local restaurants and antique shops downtown. Lake Tawakoni, a large reservoir to the south, offers fishing, camping and sunsets over the water at its state park, and the small university town of Commerce lies just to the northeast.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November, when the heat is gentler for walking downtown and visiting the lake.
Ideal stayA half day to a full day, or overnight if you add Lake Tawakoni.
ArrivingDallas Love Field and DFW Airport are about an hour west via I-30.
