About The Colony
The Colony is a city of about 45,000 people in Denton County, Texas, on the eastern shore of Lewisville Lake about 30 miles north of downtown Dallas. It began in the 1970s as a planned community and was incorporated in 1977, taking its name from the Peters Colony, the 1840s settlement program that brought early pioneers to North Texas.
For most of its history The Colony was a quiet lakeside suburb, but the opening of Grandscape along State Highway 121 turned it into one of the region's busiest shopping and entertainment hubs. The giant Nebraska Furniture Mart of Texas anchors the district, surrounded by restaurants, a live music venue, indoor karting and family attractions, while Topgolf sits nearby.
Away from the highway, The Colony is all about the lake. Stewart Creek Park offers a beach, camping and boat ramps, and the long Shoreline Trail follows the water through woods and coves. Hawaiian Falls water park keeps families busy in summer, and Frisco, Plano and Dallas are all a short drive away.
Best seasonMarch to May and October to November for mild weather; June to August for the lake and water park.
