About Tyler

Tyler is a city of about 110,000 people in East Texas, about 100 miles east of Dallas, set among pine forests and rolling hills. Founded in 1846 and named for President John Tyler, it grew as a cotton and railroad town and later boomed when the East Texas oil field was discovered in 1930. Its stately brick streets and historic homes date from those prosperous years.

Tyler is famous as the Rose Capital of America. The surrounding area once grew more than half of the rose bushes sold in the United States, and the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden, with tens of thousands of bushes in hundreds of varieties, is the largest rose garden in the country. The Texas Rose Festival each October brings a parade, a queen's coronation and garden tours.

The city's Azalea and Spring Flower Trail draws visitors each spring to its historic brick streets lined with blooming azaleas and dogwoods. Downtown, the Liberty Hall theater and historic square anchor the city center, and the Caldwell Zoo, Tyler State Park and the Goodman-LeGrand House museum round out a city known for gardens and Southern charm.

Best seasonMarch to April for azaleas and dogwoods; May and October for roses and the Texas Rose Festival.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the Rose Garden, the brick-street districts, the Caldwell Zoo and Tyler State Park.
ArrivingTyler Pounds Regional Airport has flights to Dallas; Dallas is about 90 minutes west.
