About Mesquite

Mesquite is a city of about 150,000 people just east of Dallas, founded in 1873 along the Texas and Pacific Railway and named for the mesquite trees along nearby creeks. It calls itself the Rodeo Capital of Texas, thanks to the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, which has been bringing professional cowboys to town since 1958.

Historic downtown Mesquite has a small grid of brick storefronts along Main Street and Broad Street, and the city preserves its farming past at the Florence Ranch Homestead and the Opal Lawrence Historical Park, where the Lawrence farmstead's buildings date to the late 1800s. City Lake Park offers a pond, trails and playgrounds.

The Mesquite Arena hosts rodeos, concerts and events, Town East Mall draws shoppers from across the eastern suburbs, and the Mesquite Arts Center stages theater and exhibits. Downtown Dallas, with its museums and sports venues, is about 20 minutes west.

Best seasonMarch to May and September to November for rodeos, festivals and mild weather.
Ideal stayHalf a day for downtown and the historic farms, plus an evening at the rodeo.
ArrivingDallas Love Field is about 20 miles west, and DFW International Airport is about 35 miles.
