About Wichita Falls

Wichita Falls is a city of about 105,000 people in North Texas, just south of the Oklahoma border, on the Wichita River. The original small waterfall that gave the city its name was washed away by a flood in 1886, so in 1987 the city built a new 54-foot waterfall beside Interstate 44, now its best-known landmark. An oil boom in the early 1900s brought sudden wealth and many of the downtown buildings still standing today.

Downtown is home to the Newby-McMahon Building, nicknamed the World's Littlest Skyscraper, a four-story tower built as a famous swindle during the oil boom. Depot Square has railroad exhibits and the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum, and the Museum of North Texas History covers ranching, oil and the region's military heritage.

The Circle Trail loops around the city past the falls and along the Wichita River, and Lake Wichita Park offers fishing and sunset views. Midwestern State University adds a campus feel, Sheppard Air Force Base trains pilots from across NATO, and the Kay Yeager Coliseum hosts concerts and events.

Best seasonMarch to May and September to November for mild weather and outdoor trails.
Ideal stayOne day for the falls, downtown and the museums.
ArrivingWichita Falls Regional Airport has flights to Dallas, which is about 140 miles southeast.
