About Abilene

Abilene is a city of about 125,000 people in West Central Texas, about 150 miles west of Fort Worth. It was founded in 1881 by cattlemen and the Texas and Pacific Railway, and named after Abilene, Kansas, the famous end of the Chisholm Trail. The town quickly became a shipping point for cattle and cotton, and its historic 1910 Texas and Pacific depot still stands downtown.

Abilene is home to three Christian universities, Abilene Christian, Hardin-Simmons and McMurry, along with Dyess Air Force Base, which gives the city a large military community. Downtown has been revived around the restored 1930 Paramount Theatre, the art deco Wooten Hotel and Hotel Grand, and the Frontier Texas! museum, which brings the region's frontier history to life with interactive exhibits.

The city is known as the Storybook Capital of America, with dozens of bronze sculptures of characters from children's books scattered around downtown and the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature. The Grace Museum, the 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum and the Abilene Zoo add more to see, and Abilene State Park offers camping and trails among pecan trees to the south.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November; summers are hot.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the storybook sculptures, Frontier Texas! and the museums.
ArrivingAbilene Regional Airport has flights to Dallas; I-20 runs through the city.
