About Sherman

Sherman is a city of about 45,000 people in North Texas, the county seat of Grayson County, about 60 miles north of Dallas and a short drive south of the Red River and Lake Texoma. Founded in the 1840s and named after General Sidney Sherman of the Texas Revolution, it grew as a cotton, railroad and college town.

Austin College, founded in 1849, is one of the oldest colleges in Texas and gives the city a leafy academic side. Downtown Sherman keeps a square around the Grayson County Courthouse and streets of historic brick buildings with shops and restaurants, and the Sherman Museum tells the story of the area from frontier days onward.

Recently Sherman has grown fast as a center of semiconductor manufacturing, but it remains a gateway to the outdoors. Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge on Lake Texoma draws birdwatchers, especially in winter, and the lake's marinas, beaches and trails are within half an hour. Denison and its historic Main Street are just to the north.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November; winter for waterfowl at Hagerman refuge.
Ideal stayOne day, or a weekend combined with Lake Texoma and Denison.
ArrivingDallas Fort Worth International Airport is about an hour and a quarter away; US 75 links Sherman with Dallas.
