About Boynton Beach

Boynton Beach is a city of about 80,000 people in southern Palm Beach County, Florida, about 15 miles south of West Palm Beach. It is named for Major Nathan Boynton, a Civil War veteran from Michigan who built a beach hotel here in the 1890s, and it grew as a farming town of pineapples and winter vegetables after Henry Flagler's railroad arrived. It incorporated in 1920.

Today the city is a relaxed coastal community that calls itself the Gateway to the Gulf Stream, because the warm current runs very close to shore. Boynton Harbor Marina is a base for fishing charters and drift dives on nearby reefs, and the city-owned Oceanfront Park offers a quieter beach on the barrier island.

Inland, the city borders some of the best wildlife viewing in South Florida, including the Green Cay Nature Center and the vast Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge on the edge of the Everglades. The historic Woman's Club and the Schoolhouse Children's Museum recall the early town.

Best seasonNovember to April, the dry season, which is also best for birdwatching.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for beaches, diving and the wetlands.
ArrivingPalm Beach International Airport is about 25 minutes north; Tri-Rail stops at Boynton Beach station.
