Coral Springs is a planned city of about 135,000 people in northwest Broward County, about 20 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale. Developed in the 1960s on former bean fields at the edge of the Everglades, it was carefully designed with tree-lined streets, canals and strict building codes, and it is known as one of the greenest and most family-friendly cities in South Florida.
Downtown Coral Springs is growing around a central plaza with restaurants and the Coral Springs Museum of Art, which has a sculpture garden, and the Coral Springs Center for the Arts hosts Broadway tours and concerts. Interactive public art, such as Jen Lewin's light installation Ascent, adds color to the city.
Parks are everywhere. The Sawgrass Nature Center and Wildlife Hospital cares for injured animals, Winston Park has a lake and trails, and the city's waterways and a small covered bridge give some neighborhoods a storybook feel. The Everglades and Sawgrass Mills, one of the largest outlet malls in the country, are a short drive away.
The city's planned downtown district along University Drive and Sample Road mixes newer apartment blocks, restaurants, cafes and a central plaza that hosts concerts, food truck nights and holiday events. Check the city events calendar, since most gatherings happen on weekend evenings.
A small city-run art museum next to the Center for the Arts that shows rotating exhibitions of contemporary painting, sculpture, photography and work by South Florida artists, plus classes and workshops. Admission is modest and a visit takes about an hour, so pair it with a show next door.
The city's main performing arts venue, a theater of roughly 1,500 seats on Coral Springs Drive, hosts touring concerts, comedians, Broadway-style shows, dance and community productions. Book ahead for popular weekend shows and arrive early, as the parking lot fills quickly.
A nonprofit nature center on Sportsplex Drive that rescues and rehabilitates injured native wildlife and keeps non-releasable birds, reptiles and mammals on view. A short boardwalk loops through a wooded hammock. It suits families with children; check opening hours before you go.
A protected patch of cypress swamp and pine flatwoods in northwest Coral Springs with a raised boardwalk that lets you walk through native wetland habitat and spot wading birds, turtles and lizards. It is free and quiet; go in the morning and bring insect repellent in summer.
One of the city's largest parks, with lit sports fields, playgrounds, picnic shelters, a lake and walking paths, and home to the city aquatic complex. It hosts youth leagues and big community events such as the July 4th celebration. Weekday mornings are the calmest time to visit.
A public swimming complex in Mullins Park with an Olympic-size competition pool, a diving well with platforms and a recreation pool used for lessons, swim meets and open swim. Day passes are inexpensive; check the schedule, since meets and team practices can limit lap lanes.
The official practice rink of the NHL's Florida Panthers, a multi-rink ice facility on Sportsplex Drive offering public skating sessions, skate rentals, hockey leagues and figure skating. Fans can sometimes watch free team practices; check the posted schedule and bring a jacket.
An enclosed regional shopping mall on Atlantic Boulevard at University Drive with department stores, national chain shops, a food court and nearby restaurants. It is a practical, air-conditioned stop on hot or rainy days and has plenty of free parking around the building.
A large Broward County library branch on University Drive with study rooms, a children's area, computers, maker programs and a busy schedule of free classes and talks. It is a cool, quiet place to work or read and a good resource for visitors wanting free Wi-Fi.
