Built on the edge of the Everglades, Weston is a master-planned city of lakes, palm-lined boulevards and tidy neighborhoods at the far western end of Broward County. The land was assembled by industrialist Arthur Vining Davis in the 1950s, developed by Arvida from the 1980s and incorporated as a city in 1996, so almost everything here is new and carefully landscaped.
Its long history is hidden in plain sight. Peace Mound Park protects a midden left by the Tequesta and their ancestors, used over thousands of years. Modern Weston centers on Weston Town Center, a walkable plaza of restaurants and shops beneath a clock tower, and on the 102-acre Weston Regional Park, while the older Bonaventure district grew around golf and the Weston Racquet Club hosts tennis.
The real wild card is right next door: the sawgrass of the Everglades begins where the city ends, and airboat rides at Everglades Holiday Park leave from just outside town. Fort Lauderdale's beaches are about 30 minutes east, and Miami is under an hour away.
A 32-acre open-air center at Royal Palm and Bonaventure boulevards, built from 1999 around a landmark clock tower, with sidewalk cafes, restaurants, boutiques and a small park. It is the city's social hub on weekend evenings. Parking is free, and outdoor tables are best after sunset.
A small city park preserving the Peace Mound, a midden built up by the Tequesta and their ancestors between the late Archaic and Glades periods, spanning thousands of years. Interpretive signs explain the site and early life in the Everglades. Stay on the paths, as the mound itself is protected.
The city's largest park, opened in 2000, with lighted ball fields, tennis courts, a playground, walking paths around lakes and picnic shelters. It hosts youth leagues and city events on weekends. Visit on a weekday evening for a quieter walk, and watch for herons and ibis along the water.
A city-owned tennis facility off Racquet Club Road with a cluster of courts, lessons, clinics and junior programs run by local pros. Non-residents can usually book courts for a fee. Play in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, especially from May to October.
A golf club in the older Bonaventure section of Weston, where the community first grew up around fairways, lakes and palm-shaded grounds, before the city existed. Access rules for visitors change, so call ahead about tee times. Winter is the busy season, when snowbirds fill the course.
A long-running Everglades attraction on Griffin Road at US 27, southwest of Weston, offering guided airboat rides through the sawgrass and live alligator shows. Rides last about an hour. Dry season, from December to April, brings the best wildlife viewing and more comfortable temperatures.
