About Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach is a laid-back beach city of about 110,000 people in Broward County, just north of Fort Lauderdale. It takes its name from the pompano fish that once filled local waters, and fishing is still a big part of life here, from the long pier on the beach to the charter boats heading out through the Hillsboro Inlet toward the Gulf Stream.

The beach is wide and less crowded than its neighbors, with a rebuilt fishing pier, beachfront restaurants and a promenade that comes alive at night. At the north end, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, built in 1907, guides boats past the inlet bridge, and Hillsboro Inlet Park has shady benches for watching yachts and fishing boats come and go.

Inland, Indian Mound Park preserves a shell mound left by early Native Americans, and the historic Saint Elizabeth Gardens and the modern Pompano Beach Library and Cultural Center reflect the city's growth. Pompano Beach is also popular with divers, with reefs and shipwrecks just offshore.

Best seasonNovember to April for warm, dry beach days; summers are hot with afternoon storms.
Ideal stayTwo days for the beach, the pier and a fishing or dive trip.
ArrivingFort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is about 15 miles south, and Tri-Rail stops in Pompano Beach.
