About Naples

Naples lies on southwest Florida's Gulf coast, a well-groomed resort town known for white-sand beaches, golf, upscale shopping and warm winters. It grew slowly until the twentieth century, and its older center still has a low-rise, residential feel, with the Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands stretching away to the south.

The Naples Pier, a local landmark rebuilt more than once after storms, is where people fish, stroll and gather for sunset. Nearby, Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South hold galleries, boutiques and sidewalk restaurants. On Naples Bay, Tin City's former clam-processing buildings house shops and boat tours, and Baker Park links to the Gordon River Greenway's boardwalks through mangroves. Naples Botanical Garden showcases tropical plants, and Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens grew from a historic garden attraction. Culture centers on Artis Naples, home to the Baker Museum and a resident orchestra, while Palm Cottage preserves one of the town's oldest homes. To the north, Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park and Vanderbilt Beach offer wide sand and shelling.

Naples appeals to couples, retirees and families seeking a calm, polished beach base. Winter is peak season, when prices climb and restaurants fill. Marco Island, Everglades City and the boardwalk at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary make good side trips.

Best seasonJanuary through April is sunny and dry; summer is hot, humid and stormy but cheaper.
Ideal stayFour to five days suits a relaxed beach stay with a nature outing or two.
ArrivingSouthwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers is the usual gateway, a drive up I-75.
