About Coral Gables

Coral Gables is a city of about 50,000 people just southwest of downtown Miami, often called the City Beautiful. It was planned in the 1920s by developer George Merrick, who laid out tree-lined boulevards, grand entrances, fountains and plazas and required Mediterranean Revival architecture, a style the city still protects today.

The landmarks of that boom era remain its highlights: the Biltmore Hotel with its soaring tower, the Venetian Pool carved from an old coral rock quarry, the Alhambra Water Tower, the stone city entrances and the Spanish-style City Hall. Merrick's boyhood home is preserved as a museum, and the Coral Gables Museum tells the story of the planned city.

Today Coral Gables is also home to the University of Miami and its Lowe Art Museum, the shopping and dining street known as Miracle Mile, and the Shops at Merrick Park. To the south, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and Matheson Hammock Park offer tropical plants, mangroves and a palm-fringed lagoon on Biscayne Bay.

Best seasonNovember to April for dry, mild weather; summers are hot with afternoon storms.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the landmarks, museums and gardens.
ArrivingMiami International Airport is about 15 minutes north; free Coral Gables trolleys run along Ponce de Leon Boulevard.
