Coconut Creek is a city of about 58,000 people in northern Broward County, Florida, between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. Incorporated in 1967, it calls itself the "Butterfly Capital of the World" for its butterfly-friendly gardens and planting programs.
Butterfly World, the largest butterfly park in the world, is the city's best-known attraction, with thousands of butterflies flying free in tropical aviaries, along with hummingbirds and lorikeets. Fern Forest Nature Center has boardwalks through native hammock and cypress forest.
The city has many lakes and green spaces, including Tradewinds Park with horseback riding and a farm, and Lakeside Park and Sabal Pines Park. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek and the Promenade at Coconut Creek offer dining and entertainment, and the Atlantic beaches of Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach are about 20 minutes east.
A large butterfly park inside Tradewinds Park with walk-through aviaries holding thousands of tropical butterflies, plus hummingbirds, lorikeets you can feed, botanical gardens and an insect museum. Mornings on sunny days are best, when butterflies are most active. Allow two to three hours; admission is charged.
A big Broward County park split by Sample Road, with fishing lakes, paddle boats, picnic shelters, a playground and open fields. It also has horse stables offering pony rides and trail rides, and hosts holiday light shows in winter. A small parking fee applies on weekends and holidays.
A city park in Coconut Creek with shaded walking paths, a lake, playground, picnic pavilions and sports courts, set among tall pines and sabal palms. It is a calm local spot for a walk or picnic, with restrooms and free parking. The paths are flat and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.
A 250-acre nature preserve with boardwalks and trails through tropical hardwood hammock, cypress swamp and open prairie, home to many native ferns, birds and butterflies. A small nature center has exhibits and an observation deck. Bring insect repellent, especially in the wet summer season. Entry is free.
An open-air lifestyle center with shops, restaurants, a movie theater and fitness studios arranged around landscaped walkways and fountains, and solar panels on its buildings. It hosts seasonal events like concerts and holiday activities. Parking is free, and it works well for an evening of dinner and a film.
A large casino operated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida with slot machines, table games, poker and several restaurants and bars, plus live music on weekends. It has been expanded with a new hotel tower. Guests must be 21 or older for gaming. Valet and self-parking are available in the garage.
