Lake Worth Beach is a city of about 42,000 people in Palm Beach County, Florida, just south of West Palm Beach on the Lake Worth Lagoon. Incorporated in 1913 and renamed Lake Worth Beach in 2019, it has long had an artsy, bohemian character, with historic 1920s cottages, a walkable downtown and one of the largest Finnish-American communities in Florida.
The city owns a stretch of beach on the barrier island across the lagoon, where the restored Casino building, a public beach and the William O. Lockhart Municipal Pier draw swimmers, surfers and anglers. Downtown along Lake and Lucerne Avenues is full of independent restaurants, galleries, bars and the historic Lake Worth Playhouse, and the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County runs a gallery in a restored downtown building.
Each February the Street Painting Festival turns downtown streets into huge chalk artworks. Snook Islands Natural Area and Bryant Park line the lagoon, and Palm Beach, West Palm Beach and Delray Beach are short drives away.
The city's public oceanfront on the barrier island, with a restored Casino building housing restaurants and shops, a sandy guarded beach, showers, a pool complex and a boardwalk area. It is popular for swimming, surfing and people-watching. Parking is metered and fills early on weekends.
A long concrete fishing pier next to the beach that stretches out over the Atlantic, popular with anglers and walkers who come for sunrise, surf watching and sea turtle or dolphin sightings. A small fee applies to walk or fish. Go at sunrise for the best light and calmest conditions.
The historic downtown along Lake and Lucerne Avenues, lined with independent restaurants, bars, cafes, vintage shops, galleries and murals, with live music on many evenings. It has a relaxed, quirky atmosphere. Park once and walk; Friday and Saturday nights are the liveliest.
A community theater in a restored 1920s building downtown that stages musicals, plays and comedies, with a smaller stage for independent films and studio productions. It is a beloved local institution. Book tickets ahead for popular musicals, and have dinner nearby on Lake Avenue before the show.
The county's arts agency headquarters in a restored historic building on Lake Avenue, with a free gallery showing work by Palm Beach County artists and a shop selling local art and books. It is also a good source of information on cultural events. Check opening hours before visiting.
A nonprofit arts center in a historic building near downtown with studios for glassblowing, pottery and printmaking, plus gallery exhibits and demonstrations. Visitors can watch artists at work and take short hands-on classes. Book workshops in advance, as they often sell out.
A historic Mediterranean Revival hotel from the 1920s Florida land boom, overlooking Bryant Park and the Lake Worth Lagoon at the edge of downtown. It is one of the city's most recognizable buildings. Admire its facade from the park, and check its current status, as it has undergone renovation.
A waterfront park on the Lake Worth Lagoon at the foot of Lake Avenue, with lawns, a boat ramp, a bandshell for festivals and concerts, and views of the bridge to the beach. It is a pleasant place for a sunset walk. Many events are held here, so check the city calendar.
A restored natural area in the Lake Worth Lagoon with mangrove islands, oyster reefs, seagrass and a boardwalk and fishing pier along the shore. It is great for birdwatching, kayaking and spotting fish and manatees in clear water. Bring binoculars and visit early or late for the best light.
A popular festival held downtown each February, when hundreds of artists turn the streets into huge chalk paintings over a weekend, alongside music, food and crafts. Admission is usually free. Go on Sunday afternoon to see the finished artworks, and wear comfortable shoes.
