About Miami

Miami sits at the southeastern tip of the Florida peninsula, a city shaped by the Atlantic, Biscayne Bay and immigration from across Latin America and the Caribbean. Spanish is heard as often as English, and the area stretches across several separate municipalities, including Miami Beach on its barrier island across the bay.

On South Beach, pastel hotels line Ocean Drive in the Art Deco Historic District, with the palms and sand of Lummus Park across the street. At the southern tip, South Pointe Park watches cruise ships slide out to sea. Back on the mainland, Little Havana's Calle Ocho offers Cuban coffee windows, cigar shops and domino players in Máximo Gómez Park. Wynwood's warehouse district is covered in murals, with the Wynwood Walls at its core, and downtown's Pérez Art Museum Miami overlooks the bay from Museum Park. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, an Italianate estate from the early 1900s, sits on the water in Coconut Grove, and Coral Gables' Venetian Pool fills a former coral rock quarry. On Key Biscayne, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park pairs a historic lighthouse with a quiet beach.

Miami suits beachgoers, art fans and anyone chasing food and nightlife. A car or rideshare helps between districts. The Everglades and the Florida Keys make worthwhile excursions.

Best seasonDecember through April is drier and less humid; summer and early fall bring heat, storms and hurricane risk.
Ideal stayFour to five days balances beach time with neighborhoods and a day trip.
ArrivingMiami International Airport is the main gateway, with Fort Lauderdale's airport a common alternative.
