About Margate
Margate is a city of about 60,000 people in northern Broward County, Florida, between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. It was founded in 1955 by developer Jack Marqusee, who named it by combining letters of his name with the word "gate," and it grew quickly as a residential community of canals, lakes and golf courses.
The city's clock tower on State Road 7 is its best-known landmark. Margate has many family-friendly parks, including Calypso Cove, an aquatic center with slides and splash areas, Firefighters Park, and Margate Sports Complex. Canals wind through neighborhoods, and lakes and golf courses give the city a green, open feel.
Nature lovers can find native wildlife in the city's green spaces, including butterflies, lizards and wading birds, and Butterfly World in neighboring Coconut Creek is just minutes away. The Atlantic beaches of Pompano Beach and Fort Lauderdale are about 20 minutes east.
