About Albany

Albany is a city of about 70,000 people on the Flint River in southwest Georgia, the commercial center of a region of pecan groves, peanut fields and quail-hunting plantations. Founded in 1836 as a river port for cotton, it was later a center of the civil rights movement: the Albany Movement of 1961 and 1962, supported by Martin Luther King Jr., was one of the first large campaigns to challenge segregation across a whole community.

The Albany Civil Rights Institute, in the historic Mount Zion Baptist Church, tells that story and is known for its Freedom Singers performances. Downtown, the Flint RiverQuarium is a large aquarium focused on the river's ecosystem, with a 175,000-gallon open-air tank of turtles, gar and catfish. The Thronateeska Heritage Center in the old railroad depot has a history museum, science center and planetarium, and the Ray Charles Plaza honors the musician born in Albany with a rotating statue at a piano that plays his songs.

The Flint RiverWalk links these downtown sights with landscaped paths along the river. Chehaw Park and Zoo offers animals, trails and camping, and Radium Springs Gardens surrounds one of Georgia's largest natural springs, its clear blue water flowing out at a steady 68 degrees.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November for comfortable weather on the RiverWalk and at the zoo.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the Civil Rights Institute, RiverQuarium, Ray Charles Plaza and Chehaw.
ArrivingSouthwest Georgia Regional Airport has regional flights; Atlanta is about three hours north.
