About Auburn

Auburn is a college city of about 80,000 people in east Alabama, home to Auburn University. Founded in 1836 by settlers from Georgia, it took its name from a line in a poem by Oliver Goldsmith, "Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain," which is still the city's motto.

Life in Auburn revolves around the university, founded in 1856. Jordan-Hare Stadium holds more than 88,000 fans on fall Saturdays, and after big wins fans "roll" the oak trees at Toomer's Corner with toilet paper, one of the best-known traditions in college sports. The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art and the Davis Arboretum are favorite stops on campus.

Downtown Auburn, at the edge of campus, has shops, restaurants and Toomer's Drugs, famous for its fresh lemonade. Kiesel Park and Chewacla State Park offer trails, waterfalls and mountain biking, and the Auburn Hotel and Dixon Conference Center hosts visitors near campus.

Best seasonSeptember to November for football season and mild weather; spring for blooms.
Ideal stayOne to two days for campus, Toomer's Corner, the art museum and Chewacla State Park.
ArrivingAtlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport is about 1.5 hours northeast; Auburn University Regional Airport serves private flights.
