About Statesboro

Statesboro is a city of about 33,000 people and the county seat of Bulloch County, in southeast Georgia about 55 miles northwest of Savannah. Founded in 1803, it grew as a market town for cotton and tobacco farms, and today it is best known as the home of Georgia Southern University, whose students make up a large part of the city's life.

The historic downtown is anchored by the 1894 Bulloch County Courthouse, a red-brick landmark with a tall clock tower, surrounded by restored storefronts, local restaurants, coffee shops and the Averitt Center for the Arts, which presents plays, concerts and exhibits in the restored Emma Kelly Theater. Statesboro's residential streets hold handsome Victorian and Neoclassical homes with deep porches, and the Blue Mile, a revitalized stretch of South Main Street, links downtown with the university.

Georgia Southern's campus, with its brick buildings, shady Sweetheart Circle and the topiary GSU letters, also offers the Georgia Southern Botanic Garden, the Center for Wildlife Education and Lamar Q. Ball Raptor Center, where visitors can see eagles, hawks and owls, and a natural history museum. Mill Creek Regional Park has trails and sports fields, and Savannah and the coast are about an hour away.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November for the botanic garden, campus walks and football season.
Ideal stayOne day for downtown, the Averitt Center and Georgia Southern's gardens and raptor center.
ArrivingSavannah/Hilton Head International Airport is about an hour away; I-16 passes south of the city.
