About Hinesville

Hinesville is a city of about 34,000 people in Liberty County, in coastal Georgia about 40 miles southwest of Savannah. It is the home of Fort Stewart, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River and the base of the 3rd Infantry Division, and the city's life is closely tied to the soldiers and families stationed there.

Downtown Hinesville centers on Bradwell Park, with the historic Liberty County Courthouse, monuments and memorials, and the newer city hall and civic buildings in red brick. The Fort Stewart Museum tells the story of the base and the 3rd Infantry Division, with tanks and vehicles displayed outdoors, and the Warriors Walk memorial honors soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Hinesville Farmers Market and community events fill the town square.

Liberty County holds some of the oldest history in Georgia: Midway Church and its 1700s cemetery, the Dorchester Academy, a key site in the civil rights movement, and Fort Morris Historic Site on the Medway River. The coastal marshes, the beaches of Tybee Island and the historic squares of Savannah are within an hour's drive.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November for comfortable coastal weather.
Ideal stayHalf a day for downtown and the Fort Stewart Museum, plus Midway and Savannah nearby.
ArrivingSavannah/Hilton Head International Airport is about 45 minutes away; I-95 passes east of the city.
