About Enterprise

Few towns have raised a statue to the insect that ruined their crops, but Enterprise did. In the 1910s the boll weevil swept through the cotton fields of Coffee County, and local farmers turned to peanuts instead. The switch brought new prosperity, and in 1919 the grateful town erected the Boll Weevil Monument, a classical figure holding a weevil high above her head, often described as the first monument in the world to an agricultural pest.

Today Enterprise is a city of about 28,000 in the Wiregrass region of southeast Alabama, closely tied to neighboring Fort Novosel, the home of Army Aviation. Its compact downtown keeps the restored Rawls Hotel, brick storefronts and the old railroad depot, now a local history museum. Helicopters crossing the sky are part of daily life here.

Visitors can see the monument, learn the story at the Depot Museum, tour the U.S. Army Aviation Museum on post and relax in the city's parks. Dothan, the Gulf beaches of the Florida Panhandle and the lakes of the Wiregrass are all within easy reach.

Best seasonMarch to May and October to November, when it is warm but not humid.
Ideal stayHalf a day for downtown and the monument, or a full day with the Army Aviation Museum.
ArrivingDothan Regional Airport is about 35 minutes east; Panama City Beach is about two hours south by car.
