About Wilmington

Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware, with about 70,000 people where the Christina River and Brandywine Creek meet the Delaware River. Swedish colonists founded Fort Christina here in 1638, the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley, and Old Swedes Church from 1699 is one of the oldest churches in the country still in use.

The Brandywine Valley around the city is famous for the du Pont family. Hagley Museum preserves the original DuPont gunpowder works on the Brandywine, and nearby Winterthur, Nemours Estate and Longwood Gardens show off grand mansions and gardens. The Delaware Art Museum holds a fine collection of American illustration and Pre-Raphaelite art.

Downtown, the Riverfront has restaurants, a walking path, the Kalmar Nyckel tall ship and the Delaware Children's Museum. Brandywine Park follows the creek with gardens and old mills, and Trolley Square and Market Street have lively restaurants and the historic Grand Opera House.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October for gardens and riverfront walks.
Ideal stayTwo days for the Riverfront, Hagley, the art museum and the Brandywine Valley.
ArrivingPhiladelphia International Airport is about 25 minutes north; Amtrak stops at Wilmington Station downtown.
