About Camden

Camden is a city of about 71,000 people on the Delaware River directly across from Philadelphia, connected by the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Once a major industrial center, home to RCA Victor and the New York Shipbuilding yards, it is now best known to visitors for its lively waterfront attractions and its literary history as the final home of poet Walt Whitman.

The Camden Waterfront is the city's main draw, with the Adventure Aquarium and its sharks and hippos, the Battleship New Jersey museum, one of the most decorated battleships in U.S. history, and the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion for big summer concerts. Riverfront paths offer some of the best views of the Philadelphia skyline.

The Walt Whitman House, where the poet lived his last years, is a state historic site, and Whitman is buried in nearby Harleigh Cemetery. Cooper River Park is a popular spot for rowing and picnics, the Cooper Grant neighborhood has historic rowhouses near Rutgers-Camden, and Donkey's Place is famous for its cheesesteaks on a poppy-seed roll.

Best seasonMay to October for the waterfront, battleship tours and concerts.
Ideal stayOne day for the aquarium, battleship and Whitman House, easy from Philadelphia.
ArrivingPhiladelphia International Airport is about 20 minutes away; PATCO trains and the RiverLink ferry connect to Philadelphia.
