About Laurel

Halfway between Washington and Baltimore, Laurel began as a 19th-century mill village on the Patuxent River, where a cotton factory powered by the falls drew workers and their families. The old mill-town core along Main Street survives, lined with Victorian houses, brick storefronts and churches, and the city of about 30,000 has kept a small-town feel despite sitting in the busy Route 1 corridor.

Laurel is best known for Laurel Park, a thoroughbred racetrack that has run since 1911. History lovers can tour the Laurel Museum in a former mill worker's home and the elegant Montpelier Mansion, an 18th-century Georgian plantation house whose grounds also host a busy arts center. Each spring the Main Street Festival fills the historic district with music, crafts and a parade.

Green space is a big part of the appeal. Parks follow the Patuxent River, and the vast Patuxent Research Refuge just south of town has a national wildlife visitor center, lakes and trails. The National Cryptologic Museum at nearby Fort Meade, Annapolis and both big cities are within easy reach.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October, for festivals, racing and mild trail weather.
Ideal stayOne day, or a base for several days of Washington and Baltimore trips.
ArrivingLaurel has MARC Camden Line stations; BWI Airport is about 15 minutes northeast.
